Some useful tips to avoid losing your pet

Identification

Make sure your pet wears a collar with an identification tag containing your name, phone number and address. You can also consider a microchip, a permanent and effective method of identification.

Contact details update

If you move or change your phone number, be sure to update your pet’s identification information.

Recent photos

Keep recent photos of your pet from different angles. This can be useful for searching in the event of loss.

Education and training

Teach your pet a few basic commands such as “return” and “stay”. This can be a useful reminder in the event of a dangerous situation.

Supervision

Don’t leave your pet unattended outdoors, especially in unfenced areas. Use a leash or fence to keep him safe.

What should I do if my dog is lost or stolen?

If your dog is lost or stolen, report it as soon as possible to your local police station. Don’t forget to take your dog’s passport with the chip or tattoo number. Thanks to this chip or tattoo, the police can report a dog lost or stolen, and check whether the animal has been found in the meantime.

Dogs found in the police zone are temporarily housed at the Veeweyde shelter in Anderlecht.

You can also, on your own initiative, contact DogID (manager of the database for dog identification and registration in Belgium) to report a lost or stolen dog.

More information

Safe exits

When you go out with your pet, make sure it is properly attached to a leash or in a carrier, if necessary.

Castration / Sterilization

Spaying or neutering can reduce wandering behavior and make your pet less likely to wander away from home in search of mates.

A safe environment

Make sure your home and garden are safe for your pet. Avoid toxic substances, dangerous plants and potentially ingestible objects.

Toys and stimulation

Provide enough toys and stimulation to prevent your pet from becoming bored and tempted to explore.

Social network

Connect with neighbors and other pet owners in your neighborhood. They could be useful for finding your pet if it gets lost.

Think before you take your pet outdoors

Before letting your pet roam free outdoors, think about the potential risks in the area, such as road traffic, other aggressive animals, and so on.

Register your pet

In some regions, it may be compulsory to register your pet with the local authorities. Make sure you know the requirements for your region

Keeping to a routine

Pets can be destabilized by major changes in their routine. Try to maintain a certain stability in their daily routine.

What do I do when I find a stray animal?

When you find a stray animal, it’s a good idea to contact the police as soon as possible. Our services will go on site to remove the animal.

Dogs bearing a chip or tattoo can be identified and their owner contacted.
